MORE THAN JUST MONEY.

Vitalik Buterin’s early Ethereum whitepaper proposal dates to November 2013, before the network’s launch.

A manuscript lies open beneath a warm desk lamp. Its writing faces the young developer, while its far edge lifts into a violet-lit structure of folded platforms and tiny figures. An idea is acquiring space around it. The studio is imagined, but the paper at its centre marks a real change in what a blockchain might become.

Ethereum’s official timeline dates its introductory whitepaper milestone to 27 November 2013. In his January 2014 account, Vitalik Buterin recalled writing the initial draft in San Francisco that November. This card marks that early proposal, before the public announcement and well before Ethereum’s network launched in July 2015. The later canonical whitepaper is commonly dated 2014.

The ambition was a shared platform on which developers could write many kinds of application. Rather than building separate infrastructure for each new feature, they could express rules through a general-purpose programming language. The small diagram on the page turns that idea into a branching path. The card’s phrase comes from Buterin’s own early explanation: more than just money.

The paper cat, unicorn and ghost let the illustration look forward. They refer to CryptoKitties, Uniswap and Aave, applications that would belong to Ethereum’s later ecosystem. None is presented as already running in 2013. Between the pencil and the glowing diamond, the scene connects a draft with possibilities that other builders would eventually explore.

Sources & the artist’s interpretation

Ethereum’s timeline supplies the milestone date; Buterin’s January 2014 account supplies the draft recollection and phrase. The room, paper layout and sculpture are imagined. The three app figures and doorway deliberately look ahead; this is not a documentary reconstruction or a facsimile of the original draft.
