THE WORLD COMPUTER WAKES

Ethereum’s Frontier release launched on 30 July 2015, establishing the network’s genesis block.

Purple light runs through a bank of pipes toward a city still being built. Above the junction, concrete panels form an Ethereum-shaped tower, its open floors and scaffolding exposed to the evening sky. This imagined industrial landscape gives computation a physical form: the machinery has come alive while much of the building remains unfinished.

On 30 July 2015, Ethereum's Frontier release went live. Participants generated and loaded the genesis block, establishing the starting point of the new network. The launch brought the idea of a programmable blockchain into a live system that developers could begin working with. Ethereum's announcement described the ambition as a world computer that anyone could program, paying for the resources they used.

Frontier was deliberately early and rough. The team described it as a barebone release for technical users, with command-line tools, limited documentation and bugs still to be expected. Its first software imposed a temporary block gas limit of 5,000, effectively preventing normal transactions during the initial thawing period while miners and other participants got their clients running.

Gas measures computational work. In this illustration, glowing pipes make that abstract resource visible, directing the eye toward the zero at the city's junction. The scene is fictional: Ethereum has no central gasworks or physical fuel supply. The unfinished tower expresses a network ready for builders, with its future still open. Where The Ether Sale imagined what might be built, Ethereum Goes Live shows the infrastructure beginning to work.

Sources & the artist’s interpretation

Ethereum Launches, 30 July 2015 confirms Frontier and the genesis block. Frontier is coming, 22 July 2015 describes the early release and 5,000-gas thawing limit. Ethereum's gas guide explains gas as computational work. The city, pipes and buildings are an artistic metaphor, not a historical site. The GAS arrows guide the eye toward the city.
