ORIGINAL HISTROVE ARTWORK 030 / SEASON ONE

THE DOLLAR GOES DIGITAL.

Realcoin first issued tokens on 6 October 2014, before the project was rebranded as Tether.

In a ruined library, an archivist bends over a ledger. A dollar sign rises from the page into a glowing seal. The image gives an old financial habit a new form: a balance recorded in familiar money becomes something that can move through a digital network. Behind the light is still a promise, written in the books of an issuer.

Tether's anniversary account dates the first issuance of its tokens to 6 October 2014. The project was then called Realcoin. Its original tokens used an overlay on Bitcoin, the system later known as the Omni Layer. They were meant to bring a familiar dollar denomination into a network better known for bitcoin's changing market price. The selected moment is this first issuance, before the name Tether appeared in the public rebrand.

On 20 November 2014, Realcoin announced its new Tether name and private beta. The company described tokens backed by traditional currencies and redeemable for those currencies. That was the issuer's proposition: combine blockchain transfers with a unit people already understood. The announcement's statements about backing and audits were company claims, rather than independent proof that every promise had been fulfilled.

This is the useful tension inside a dollar token. A blockchain can record its movement, while the value it aims to represent depends on arrangements beyond that blockchain. Reserves, the issuer and access to redemption still matter; a token's market price can stray from its intended peg. Realcoin's beginnings help explain the stablecoin economy that followed: familiar money represented inside crypto, with a different set of dependencies carried along with it.

Sources & the artist’s interpretation

Tether's anniversary account supplies the October issuance date and Bitcoin-layer origin; its 20 November 2014 announcement records the rebrand and issuer's promises. The library, archivist, ledger and glowing seal are symbolic fiction, not a literal 2014 scene or founder portrait. THE DOLLAR GOES DIGITAL. is HISTROVE's editorial caption.
