NEW GROWTH, SAME ROOTS.
On 14 November 2021, Bitcoin's Taproot soft fork activated at block 709,632. Bitcoin Core 0.21.1 had supplied the activation rules earlier that year. The change extended Bitcoin's existing network, introducing new ways to authorise spending. Older software remained compatible with the chain, while upgraded nodes enforced the new rules.
Three linked specifications did different jobs. BIP 340 defined Bitcoin's Schnorr signatures. BIP 341 introduced Taproot outputs and their spending paths. BIP 342 defined Tapscript, the rules for executing scripts within Taproot. Together, they gave developers a more flexible foundation for building payments and contracts.
Taproot can let an output be spent using a signature or an alternative script. With suitable signing protocols, cooperating participants can combine their keys and produce one signature. A successful key path spend keeps any alternative scripts unrevealed, helping a complex arrangement resemble a simple payment.
When a script path is needed, the spender reveals the chosen script and a proof connecting it to the committed tree. Other scripts remain hidden. These constructions can save transaction space and reduce fees for suitable spending arrangements; the upgrade did not make every Bitcoin payment cheaper or anonymous.
Activation made the rules available, while wallets and services still needed support to use them. The imagined gardener captures that continuing work: a fresh branch carefully joined to an established tree. NEW GROWTH, SAME ROOTS presents Taproot as an extension of Bitcoin, with benefits that depended on how people built and used it.
