TOGETHER TO SOCHI.

The Dogecoin community supported Jamaica’s Olympic bobsleigh team through fundraising in 2014.

Cold light catches the sled as two athletes lean into the push. Around them, the crowd is all colour, flags and encouragement. The illustration makes an online fundraiser physical: many small acts of support gathered at the edge of the ice. The athletes still supply the strength and skill. The people cheering have found a way to help them reach the starting line.

In January 2014, Jamaica had qualified for the Winter Olympics in Sochi, its first bobsleigh appearance since 2002. Qualification settled the sporting question, but the team still needed money for preparations. Supporters turned to crowdfunding, and the appeal travelled beyond the usual sporting circles. A cryptocurrency community with a Shiba Inu mascot was among those who picked it up.

By 20 January, Dogecoin supporters had gathered over 26 million DOGE, initially valued around $25,000, for Jamaica’s bobsled campaign. That contribution joined a wider effort across fundraising platforms. The team later explained that donations would help with training, equipment and shipping the sled to Russia; Olympic organisations were covering airfare and accommodation in the Olympic Village. The useful achievement was shared support for an already qualified team.

The story gave Dogecoin’s playful identity a purpose people could immediately understand. Here was something to do with an internet currency besides watch its price: gather together, contribute what you could and help someone else take part. HISTROVE catches that energy in the moment before the sled moves. The dog on the luggage belongs to the crowd’s story; the competition belongs to the athletes.

Sources & the artist’s interpretation

Contemporary accounts in ABC News , The Guardian and Crowdfund Insider document the appeal, early Dogecoin total and the team’s explanation of costs. The date marks the fundraising story, not an Olympic race. The trackside gathering and its props are imagined; Dogecoin contributed to a broader campaign and did not pay every expense or determine the sporting outcome. TOGETHER TO SOCHI is editorial copy.
