OFF PEG.

During 10–13 March 2023, USDC's promise of dollar stability faced a banking-system shock. Circle had $3.3 billion of its reserves at Silicon Valley Bank, about 8% of the total. Uncertainty about access to those funds helped push USDC below its dollar peg. Reserves caught in a failed bank were not the same as reserves proven permanently lost.

On 12 March, the Treasury, Federal Reserve and FDIC announced that all SVB depositors would be protected, with access to their money beginning Monday, 13 March. Circle said its $3.3 billion would consequently be available when banks reopened. Deposit protection and the resumption of banking and redemption activity helped restore confidence as the depeg narrowed. Operational recovery continued beyond that weekend.

The card's dollar shop is fictional editorial symbolism, not a documented incident. Its everyday setting makes an abstract question tangible: what happens when something labelled one dollar briefly commands less? The scene represents temporary uncertainty around a financial promise, rather than a shop that actually changed its prices or refused USDC.
