ORIGINAL HISTROVE ARTWORK 061 / SEASON ONE

USERS BECOME OWNERS.

On 16 September 2020, Uniswap introduced UNI, its governance token, and opened a retrospective distribution to earlier participants. The exchange itself had launched on 2 November 2018. This was a new chapter in how an existing protocol would be governed.

Each eligible historical user address could claim 400 UNI. Eligibility drew on Uniswap v1 or v2 activity before a snapshot ending at 00:00 UTC on 1 September 2020. The announcement counted 251,534 user addresses, including around 12,000 whose interactions had only resulted in failed transactions.

Historical liquidity providers received a separate allocation calculated from their past contributions. The user grant was therefore one part of a wider distribution. UNI also carried the ability to delegate voting power, connecting possession of a token with participation in decisions about the protocol.

The artwork turns an onchain distribution into an airborne delivery. A cargo aircraft crosses a glowing sea of clouds while three pink parachutes lower crates marked 400 UNI. Their repeated labels make the equal user grant visible; their different distances give the imagined delivery depth and movement.

USERS BECOME OWNERS expresses the move toward community governance. It is editorial shorthand, not a claim that UNI made recipients shareholders in Uniswap Labs. The scene celebrates recognition of past participation, while the historical cutoff remains essential: simply owning a wallet did not make someone eligible.
